A championship tripleheader is about to take place in front of a packed crowd at UFC 261.
A championship tripleheader is about to take place in front of a packed crowd at UFC 261.
Whether it is too early for a full stadium is an entirely different subject, but the crowd will certainly add life to the fights on the main card. Headlined by a welterweight championship fight pitting Kamaru Usman against Jorge Masvidal, this has all the pieces necessary to be a tremendous card. The great Valentina Shevchenko also defends her flyweight title against Jessica Andrade, and Zhang Weili looks to make a statement in her strawweight title defense against Rose Namajunas, her toughest opponent to date.
Even the non-title bouts are compelling. In light heavyweight competition, Jimmy Crute looks to take the next step to stardom with a victory against Anthony Smith. Middleweights Chris Weidman and Uriah Hall also meet in a very exciting matchup, one that could spell doom for Weidman in UFC if he loses.
The focus here will be on Usman-Masvidal. This is a night of second chances; for Masvidal, who lost to Usman last summer; for Andrade, who seeks to erase the tag of fluke champion from her resume; and Namajunas, who has a chance to reclaim the title that once belonged to her.
Top to bottom, the entire 261 represents a massive night for the UFC.
Tatis led off Saturday's game with a home run, then covered one eye while rounding the bases as a callback to Bauer's spring training antics.
Another day, another home run by Fernando Tatis Jr.—this time with a twist.
As if the Dodgers-Padres rivalry couldn't get any more juicy, Tatis led off Saturday's game by homering off of Trevor Bauer, his third home run in his last six at-bats. Prior to Friday's outburst, Tatis was 4-for-25 (.160) since coming off the injured list, so it's safe to say he's snapped out of his mini-slump.
Tatis seemed to enjoy this one a bit more than usual, though, as he covered one eye and looked back at the Padres dugout as he rounded first base.
The move was a nice callback to spring training when Bauer decided to pitch against the Padres with one eye closed. At the time, Bauer said he was "just having a little bit of fun," and he was simply trying to make the game more challenging for himself.
"I figured if they can't score off me with one eye open, it's gonna be difficult to score off me with two eyes open," Bauer said, per ESPN's Alden Gonzalez.
It's clear the Padres remembered Bauer's antics. Bauer tossed six innings with one run allowed in his first matchup against San Diego, departing with a lead that the Dodgers bullpen would eventually give up. He retired Tatis in all three matchups that game, though he allowed a home run to Jake Cronenworth.
Regardless of how his taunt is received in the Dodgers dugout, it's been a banner couple of games for Tatis. His two-homer game came on the anniversary of his father hitting two grand slams in one inning (also at Dodger Stadium).
And because baseball is beautiful, what did Tatis Sr. do the day after his pair of grand slams? That's right, hit another home run—though he likely kept both eyes open while rounding the bases.

Before Arizona's annual spring game, Gronk caught a ball that was dropped from 600 feet in the air.
Buccaneers tight end
Rob Gronkowski paid a visit to his old stomping grounds on Saturday and set a Guinness World Record before Arizona's annual spring game.Gronkowski, who also served as a coach for the game, was unveiled to the Wildcats team in full uniform before coach Jedd Fisch explained to his team why he was suited up.
The four-time Super Bowl champion would be attempting the highest altitude catch in history at 600 feet in the air. The ball was dropped from a helicopter hovering above Arizona Stadium and although it took three attempts, the record ended with a signature Gronk spike before he was mobbed by the team.
The previous world record was made in 2017 at TCU when a ball was dropped from 573 feet in the air and it was caught by Tyler Toney during part of a "Dude Perfect" YouTube video series, per the Arizona Daily Star's Justin Spears.
If that video isn't good enough, there was another angle that captured the pure hilarity of the situation. Wildcats legend Tedy Bruschi, who also took on guest coaching, was in attendance and his reaction to the catch was something to see.
You can say what you want about Gronk, but you can never say he's boring.
"Every time you step on that field, you got to raise that bar to another level baby, and I just raised that bar to this level baby," he said after he set the world record.

With 50 strikeouts, deGrom passed Shane Bieber and Nolan Ryan for the most punch-outs in a player's first four starts in big-league history.
At this point, every Jacob deGrom outing is appointment television.
The two-time Cy Young Award winner was in peak form Friday night against the Nationals, tossing his second career shutout with a career-high 15 strikeouts. That brings his season punch-out total to 50, breaking the previous record of 48 for most strikeouts in a player's first four outings held by Shane Bieber (2021) and Nolan Ryan (1978).
Because he can do no wrong, deGrom also went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI double. He's 6-for-11 on the season and has a hit in every game he's played in, and has scored more runs (three) than earned runs given up (one).
The Mets won, 6-0, as deGrom lowered his career ERA to 2.55—the lowest in Mets history. He allowed just two hits and no walks on the night.
deGrom has notched at least 14 strikeouts in his last three starts, becoming the third player ever to accomplish that feat along with Gerrit Cole (2019) and Pedro MartÃnez (1999). He's the first Mets pitcher to strike out 15 since Al Leiter on Aug. 8, 1999, per MLB.com's Sarah Langs.
Of his 109 pitches, 10 clocked in at 100 miles per hour or harder, topping out at 101 mph. deGrom got 30 swings-and-misses and retired the last 19 batters of the game.
So far this season, deGrom has allowed just 13 hits and one earned run over 29 innings, with 50 strikeouts and a 0.31 ERA. Be sure to set your calendars—his next start is scheduled for Friday at Philadelphia.

In 12 starts last season, Lamet went 3-1 with a 2.09 ERA, striking out 93 batters in 69 innings. He gave up one earned run or fewer in nine of his 12 starts and never allowed more than three, finishing fourth in the National League Cy Young Award voting.

Significant changes are coming to fall camp, including a major reduction of full-pad practices and the abolishment of collision exercises, sources tell Sports Illustrated.
Change is coming to college football, and this time, the modifications are on the field.
While the last several weeks have been spent on
transfer legislation and athlete compensation changes, college sports leaders are poised to make an adjustment between the lines: Preseason camp is getting a facelift. In response to results from a five-year concussion study released earlier this spring, an NCAA legislative committee is deeply exploring ways to make the annual August camp a safer place, officials told Sports Illustrated in interviews this week. The Football Oversight Committee (FOC), college football’s highest policy-making group, plans to present recommendations soon that will significantly change one of football’s most grueling traditions.
Committee members are considering a reduction of full-padded camp practices (from 21 to eight), the complete abolishment of collision exercises (such as the “Oklahoma” drill) and limiting a team to two scrimmages per camp (lowered from three and a half).
The changes stem from a study published in February that was funded by the NCAA and Department of Defense. The study tracked head exposures in six Division I college football teams from 2015 to '19, finding that 72% of concussions occurred during practice and nearly 50% happened in preseason practice, despite it representing just one-fifth of the football season. Total head impacts in the preseason occurred at twice the rate of the regular season. More than 650 players from Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Wisconsin, UCLA, Air Force and Army were involved in the study.
The study leaves college administrators with no choice but to again adjust college football’s preseason camp policies, says Shane Lyons, the West Virginia athletic director and the chair of the FOC.
“The data is the data,” Lyons told SI. “We’re going to have to make changes. We have to reduce the exposure that we’re having with concussions in the preseason practice time period.”
Though the changes seem significant, they shouldn’t impact the majority of coaches in a dramatic way. Results from an American Football Coaches Association survey this spring showed that many coaches already adhere to such camp practices, says Todd Berry, the AFCA executive director.
The potential new rules have coaches mainly concerned in one area: preparing their young players for high-speed college-level game contact.
“Our coaches don’t want concussions. We don’t go out there and just beat each other up,” Berry says. “There’s no value in that, but there does need to be enough contact to allow players to prepare their bodies for contact or else you’re asking for more injuries on the field. What coaches are concerned about is being able to evaluate a younger player and teach them how to prepare for contact.”
The changes are far from official. A subgroup of the FOC has spent the last several weeks ironing out details and will present the changes to the full committee at its meeting Thursday. Afterward, the new policies will be sent to member schools for feedback before the FOC officially recommends the legislation to the NCAA Division I Council, which must in turn OK the changes at its meeting on May 19.
The new rules are the latest way the NCAA is attempting to relax what was once known as the most excruciating and laborious experience in football. For years now, fall camp has seen its teeth removed in the name of safety. In 2017, the NCAA banned two-a-days, and in 2018, the governing body reduced the number of preseason practices from 29 to 25.
The latest impending modifications keep both the number of practices (25) over the same amount of days (29) but adjust the type of practices coaches can hold.
In the latest working model, a 25-practice camp must include at least nine non-contact, padless practices (helmets only). That’s up from the current rule of two mandatory padless practices, which are part of an acclimatization period at the beginning of each camp. No more than eight practices can feature full pads and full contact, up from 21 under the current rule.
Lyons refers to the working model as 9-8-8: a minimum of nine padless practices, eight practices in shells (helmets and shoulder pads) and a maximum of eight practices in full pads with full contact. In shells, players cannot be tackled to the ground, under current rules.
The working model would also reduce scrimmages from three and a half to two; would permit a maximum of 90 minutes of full tackling in any one single padded practice; and would prohibit more than two consecutive full-padded practices, requiring coaches to wedge in non-contact and shell practices.
Lyons left the door ajar to future changes in the model.
“Is it going to be the perfect model? No,” Lyons says, “but it’s not the end all be all. We’re in a short time frame here to make these changes. Does the camp in 2022 look different? It could.”
One thing that may never return to college football practices: the archaic head-knocking, one-on-one collision drills. That includes the Oklahoma drill, Board drill and Bull in the Ring. The prohibition on these drills would be year round, barring the exercises completely from college football.
The changes are along similar lines to what the NFL and its players union has done. Their collective bargaining agreement limits padded practices and these collision drills.
“A lot of our coaches have already done away with the drills,” Berry says. “I don’t know anybody that has done Bull in the Ring since the 1980s.”
No other changes are expected to camp. The committee rejected a request from the SEC to expand camp by six days to allow for more days off. According to a letter obtained by SI and sent to the FOC, the league wanted to hold 25 practices over 35 days, lengthening camp to spread out its full-contact practices.
Meanwhile, summer workouts will revert to the same protocols as years past, Lyons says, meaning the elimination of the two-week OTA-type workouts that football teams were allowed the last two weeks of last July.

How do you score three runs in one inning without getting a hit? The A's somehow found a way.
Somebody call Brad Pitt and Chris Pratt, because the Oakland A's simply cannot lose.
The A's beat the Twins on Wednesday, 13–12 (!!) in 10 innings, to run their win streak to 11 games in what was perhaps the wildest game of the young season. There was a lot going on in this one, including six lead changes, 13 pitchers, seven home runs and 31 hits—but skip right ahead to the 10th inning.
The Twins took a 12–10 lead in the top half of the inning thanks to a massive two-run homer by Byron Buxton. Then, Minnesota retired the the first two A's batters in the home half of the frame before Seth Brown and Elvis Andrus each worked walks to load the bases. That brought up Mark Canha, who hit a routine ground ball to Twins second baseman Travis Blankenhorn, who subsequently did this:
Blankenhorn entered the game as a pinch runner in the top half of the inning, replacing third baseman Josh Donaldson and shifting second baseman Luis Arraez to third. That decision had an immense domino effect that would be fully realized one batter after Blankenhorn's error kept the A's in the game.
Oakland's next batter, Ramón Laureano, fouled off five consecutive pitches before hitting a ground ball to Arraez, who threw it roughly eight feet up the right field line and gifted the A's an improbable victory.
Somehow, someway, the A's got three runs on zero hits in the 10th inning. After Stephen Piscotty flied out to center field to lead off the inning, the ball never even left the infield—that is, until Arraez's errant throw on the game's final play.
Since starting the season 1-7 and looking pretty awful doing it, the A's have completely flipped the switch and vaunted all the way into first place in the American League West. The offense has done a complete turnaround, while the pitching staff—despite today's 12-run shelling—has delivered as well, throwing four shutouts in the past six games.
Will the A's lose again this season? Probably, but at present, it's hard to see how they ever could.
