Sam Farmer's NFL mock draft 2.0: Need for QBs will create some surprises

Will NFL teams pass on the passers?

In five of the last seven drafts, clubs have selected at least three quarterbacks in the top 10. This year the class isn’t as deep at the position, and other needs could mean quarterbacks need to wait a while to hear their names called.

But this mock draft, which comes on the eve of the NFL’s annual owners meeting, contemplates three quarterbacks in the top seven picks. Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders go quickly, unsurprisingly, but also Mississippi’s Jaxson Dart, who’s garnering increasing interest.

Down. Set. Mock!

1. Tennessee Titans: QB Cam Ward, Miami — First-year Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi was in Kansas City when Patrick Mahomes flipped the fortunes of that franchise. Can Ward be a difference maker?

2. Cleveland Browns: Edge Abdul Carter, Penn State — Big Ten defensive player of the year would be a devastating bookend to Myles Garrett.

3. New York Giants: WR/CB Travis Hunter, Colorado — This two-way phenom could help the Giants on either side of the ball. Now, if they only had a quarterback on the rise.

4. New England Patriots: Edge Jalon Walker, Georgia — The Patriots love those versatile defenders they can move all over. Just the way new coach Mike Vrabel used to play.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars: DT Mason Graham, Michigan — New GM James Gladstone, who came from the Rams, knows well how building a rock-solid defensive line can reverberate throughout the team.

6. Las Vegas Raiders: QB Shedeur Sanders, Colorado — The acquisition of veteran Geno Smith gives coach Pete Carroll’s Raiders the luxury of patience in bringing along a young quarterback.

7. New York Jets: QB Jaxson Dart, Mississippi — Dart impressed a lot of people at the combine, and while many might say this is too early for him, the Jets have a pressing need.

8. Carolina Panthers: DT Walter Nolen, Mississippi — The NFL’s worst defense against the run gets a boost with an immovable object in the middle.

9. New Orleans Saints: RB Ashton Jeanty, Boise State — Alvin Kamara will turn 30 in July, and although he’s still productive, it won’t be long before he’s passing the torch.

10. Chicago: OT Josh Simmons, Ohio State — Caleb Williams was sacked 68 times last season, and while those aren’t all attributable to his blockers, the Bears' line is in need of help.

11. San Francisco 49ers: DT Kenneth Grant, Michigan — Not too long ago, the 49ers were loaded on the defensive line. Now, that group is Nick Bosa and a bunch of regular guys.

12. Dallas Cowboys: CB Will Johnson, Michigan — The Cowboys haven’t used their top pick on a cornerback since taking Byron Jones 27th in 2015. Johnson is big, physical and instinctive.

13. Miami Dolphins: S Nick Emmanwori, South Carolina — The Dolphins could use a couple of safeties. Although Emmanwori is built like a linebacker, he ran a scorching 4.38-second 40-yard dash.

14. Indianapolis Colts: TE Tyler Warren, Penn State — The Colts got very little production from their tight ends last season, and that often meant they couldn’t sustain drives.

15. Atlanta Falcons: Edge Mykel Williams, Georgia — The Falcons were 31st in the league last season with 31 sacks. Williams can get to the quarterback and play the run.

16. Arizona Cardinals: OT Will Campbell, Louisiana State — The Cardinals have their left tackle in Paris Johnson, and the versatile Campbell can help them at other spots along the line.

17. Cincinnati Bengals: CB Maxwell Hairston, Kentucky — Hairston melted the turf at the combine with his 4.28 40, providing a big bump to his draft stock.

18. Seattle Seahawks: WR Tetairoa McMillan, Arizona — The Seahawks picked up Cooper Kupp, who will help them, but the 6-foot-5 McMillan is built more like a DK Metcalf replacement.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: LB Jihaad Campbell, Alabama — Campbell, the prototypical middle linebacker, can learn a lot from a Lavonte David in the late afternoon of his career.

20. Denver Broncos: Edge Mike Green, Marshall — Having acquired a tight end, and this being too early for the second-best running back, the Broncos grab the NCAA sack leader.

21. Pittsburgh Steelers: DT Tyleik Williams, Ohio State — The Steelers need help along the defensive line, particularly when it comes to stopping the run.

22. Chargers: TE Colston Loveland, Michigan — Justin Herbert gets a tight end he can reliably target, and coach Jim Harbaugh is reunited with a player he knows well.

23. Green Bay Packers: G Tyler Booker, Alabama — The Packers need help along the interior of their offensive line, and the gigantic Booker would bring that immediately.

24. Minnesota Vikings: G Grey Zabel, North Dakota State — The Vikings need an upgrade at left guard, and Zabel has turned heads of late. He can play at either guard spot or center.

25. Houston Texans: OT Aireontae Ersery, Minnesota — The Texans have spent a ton of money on their offensive line but haven’t seen satisfactory results. Quarterback C.J. Stroud needs help up front.

Read more:After 'terrible' season, Mike Williams eager to win with Jim Harbaugh and Chargers

26. Rams: CB Benjamin Morrison, Notre Dame — Having re-signed offensive lineman Alaric Jackson, and with the acquisition of star receiver Davante Adams, the Rams turn their attention to cornerbacks.

27. Baltimore Ravens: Edge Shemar Stewart, Texas A&M — Baltimore’s defense came on late last season, and the Ravens need to beef up what traditionally has been their signature.

28. Detroit Lions: OT Kelvin Banks Jr., Texas — With so much money going elsewhere, the Lions have had to reshuffle along the interior of their offensive line.

29. Washington Commanders: WR Luther Burden III, Missouri — Quarterback Jayden Daniels could use another fleet-footed, sure-handed target to take some of the heat off of top receiver Terry McLaurin.

30. Buffalo Bills: DT Derrick Harmon, Oregon — The Bills have gotten better on the edges but still need to fortify the interior of their defensive line.

31. Kansas City Chiefs: G Armand Membou, Missouri — It was musical chairs on the Kansas City offensive line at the end of last season. This is an area of extreme need.

32. Philadelphia Eagles: DE Nic Scourton, Texas A&M — Scourton is built like a run-stopper at 6-4, 280, but he’s got a lot of quickness and moves that make him a dangerous pass rusher.

Suns' Kevin Durant leaves game with rolled ankle, will not join team to start road trip on Tuesday

A Phoenix Suns team desperately in need of wins could be without Kevin Durant for at least the start of a critical three-game road trip after Durant rolled his ankle on Sunday night against Houston.

The injury happened with 6:57 left in the third quarter, when the Suns were already down by 35. Durant drove the lane, stepped on Rockets’ Jabari Smith Jr.'s foot, and went to the ground. Durant had to be helped off the court and did not return to the game.

There was no update on Durant's status postgame, he is set to get an MRI on Monday, although it's telling that he will stay in Phoenix when the Suns head out for Milwaukee for the start of a three-game road trip on Tuesday. The Suns have six games remaining, spread across the next two weeks — it is very possible Durant could miss the rest of this season.

The Suns went on to lose to the Rockets 148-109 and are now 1.5 games behind the Kings for the final play-in spot in the West. Phoenix has lost three in a row, two of those by 30+ points, and is trending in the wrong direction. If Durant is going to miss time, the Suns' odds of making the postseason become very slim, and the question of whether to shut down Devin Booker and others for the season becomes very real.

Top Eagles storylines at 2025 NFL owners meetings

Top Eagles storylines at 2025 NFL owners meetings originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

PALM BEACH, Fla. — The initial flurry of free agency is over and we’re now less than one month from the NFL Draft.

There’s really no down time in the NFL schedule.

The top decision-makers for NFL teams (owners, GMs and head coaches) will all meet this week at The Breakers in Palm Beach for the NFL’s annual meetings.

The Eagles are coming off a Super Bowl victory and are hoping to get back there in 2025. They have earned the respect they’ll see this week in Palm Beach.

Here are some Eagles storylines we’ll be following:

Talking to Jeffrey Lurie

Typically the owners meetings are one time per year we hear from Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie but that changes when the Eagles are in the Super Bowl. Lurie spoke on a myriad of topics on Super Bowl Opening Night. But it’s always good to talk to the man in charge.

There are several topics to discuss with Lurie, including the status of a contract extension for head coach Nick Sirianni. While the Eagles don’t talk about negotiations publicly, we might get a sense of how soon an extension will be completed for the Super Bowl-winning head coach who enters his final season under contract in 2025. A year ago, we were getting set to ask Lurie why he decided to keep Sirianni; a lot can change in 12 months.

There are some other issues to chat with Lurie about. One of them being the potential for the next Eagles’ stadium to be a dome. That’s a topic that came up during Opening Night last month in New Orleans.

In the NFLPA report card, the Eagles got some good marks and some bad. They were ranked 30th in team travel, though, and their locker room ranked 27th. They were also ranked 27th in treatment of families as one of a fe teams that doesn’t provide daycare during home games.

And then there’s the topic of play style. Lurie has talked before about wanting his team to be on the cutting edge of passing offense but the Eagles had a run-first attack in 2024. Obviously, their plan worked and the passing offense was there when they needed it. But a tad curious if the 2024 season changed any of Lurie’s beliefs in that area.

Howie explains the offseason

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman spoke with reporters at the Combine in Indianapolis but that was in the lead-up to free agency. This is his chance to explain what happened in that initial flurry and why the Eagles did what they did.

The top question for Roseman will be about the trade of C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Texans. This is a move that will probably hurt the team in the short-term just a year after bringing Gardner-Johnson back on a one-year deal.

Roseman can also explain his bargain bin shopping in free agency for players like Azeez Ojulari, A.J. Dillon and more.

Rule changes on the horizon

These meetings are also where NFL owners vote on rule change proposals. Any proposal would need 24 of 32 owners to sign off on it. Here are a few key rule proposals this year:

• The Packers have proposed to outlaw the Eagles’ Tush Push play by making the push element of the QB sneak at the snap illegal. It’s a play the Eagles have perfected but the rest of the league has not. The Packers cited “player safety” and “pace of play” in their proposal. But the league has already said no players got hurt on the play in 2024.

• The Eagles proposed that the NFL’s postseason overtime rules carry over to the regular season. That would create 15-minute overtimes in which both teams get to possess the ball even if the first team scores a touchdown.

• The Competition Committee is proposing to make the dynamic kickoff rule permanent and to move the touchback spot from the 30 to 35 to encourage more teams to kick the ball short of the goal line and thus create more returns. The return rate in 2025 was 32.8% up from 21.8% in 2023.

• The Competition Committee is also proposing a change of language that would allow a team trailing to attempt an onside kick at any time, not just in the fourth quarter.

• The Lions proposed that defensive holding and illegal contact no longer result in an automatic first down.

• The Lions also proposed a bylaw rule to change playoff formatting to allow wild card teams to be higher seeds than division winners if they have a better record.

More moves coming?

Back at the Combine, Roseman asked the fanbase for patience. He always says that the talent-acquisition phase lasts through the trade deadline and his actions have backed that up.

Just took at some of the veteran additions made after March in recent seasons:

2024: Mekhi Becton, Nick Gates, Jahan Dotson

2023: Olamade Zaccheaus, D’Andre Swift, Zach Cunningham

2022: A.J. Brown, James Bradberry, C.J. Gardner-Johnson

Obviously, the biggest one from last year was signing Becton after the Eagles didn’t draft an offensive lineman early. He ended up being a full-time starter at right guard. Any player signed after the draft doesn’t factor into the NFL’s compensatory pick formula, which is a big deal for the Eagles this offseason.

Breakfast with Nick

Reporters will also get some time with Sirianni this week in a 30-minute breakfast session on Tuesday morning. These breakfasts used to be an hour-long but got cut in half a few years ago. But it’s still valuable time to hear Sirianni’s thoughts on some of the free agent additions and the direction of the roster. It’s also our first time talking to Sirianni since the Eagles hired Scot Loeffler to be their new quarterbacks coach.

The AFC coaches are all available on Monday morning and the NFC coaches will be available on Tuesday.

A look ahead to the draft

With the draft less than a month away, we’ll get some early indications on what the Eagles are thinking. They are expected to have 20 picks over the next two years and have eight picks for next month’s draft.

Here are their picks this year:

Round 1-32
Round 2-64
Round 3-96
Round 4-134
Round 5-161
Round 5-164
Round 5-165
Round 5-168

Expert picks & predictions for Sunday’s Clippers vs. Cavaliers game

NBC Sports Bet Best Bet

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) leans Evan Mobley to go Over his 2.5 blocks and steals prop:

"At +120 odds, I lean Evan Mobley to go Over his 2.5 blocks and steals prop versus the Clippers. Mobley is in a neck-and-neck race for Defensive Player of the Year against Draymond Green and I think it's Mobley's award to lose, which is currently trending that way. Despite money coming in on Green and nothing but support for the guy chirping for the award, Mobley has recorded four straight games with two-plus blocks and has 12 combined steals and blocks in that span. For +100 or better value, I think Mobley Over his steals and blocks (stocks) is a fun prop to play down the stretch of the regular season."

Why Draymond believes Spurs' Castle deserves Rookie of the Year

Why Draymond believes Spurs' Castle deserves Rookie of the Year originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Warriors icon Draymond Green has made his choice for the 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year.

In Friday’s edition of his “Draymond Green Show” podcast with co-host and ex-Golden State guard Baron Davis, the four-time champion explained why he believes San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle is worthy of the honor.

“I think he should,” Green told Davis about Castle deserving Rookie of the Year. “After we played them, I was saying, ‘I think that kid is going to be real.’ When I look at the rookie class, he’s been the most consistent player all year. I think everybody else has been up and down, he’s been extremely consistent.”

“Stephon Castle has had games that jump off the page. But I mean the whole body of work, there’s no rookie averaging 20 points; you haven’t seen that. His consistency all year is what makes him the Rookie of the Year.”

They say consistency is key.

Castle’s averages are solid across the board; over 71 games, he’s averaged 14.2 points, 3.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds in 26 minutes. He quietly has had 21 games of 20-plus points and two of 30-plus.

Just one day before Green’s podcast episode was released, Castle also became the first rookie to reach 1,000 points scored this season, after scoring 22 points in San Antonio’s 124-116 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Not too many rookies have caught Green’s eye. But Green believes Castle – who was selected No. 4 overall by the Spurs in the 2024 NBA Draft – will be an All-Star in the near future.

“You give this Rookie of the Year to Stephon Castle, you’re going to look back in two years like, ‘Well, he’s an All-Star. Guess we got it right,’” Green said. “So he’s got that potential, he will reach that potential. That’s the guy. He should be Rookie of the Year, 1,000 percent.”

Green has a basketball eye unlike any other. His bet surely is a safe one.

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) likes the Pistons to cover and win:

"Detroit has a major rest advantage in this game having last played on Tuesday, while Cleveland played last night. This will be the third game in four days for the Cavaliers as well, so it's Detroit or pass for me and I'd sprinkle the Pistons' ML since they are 0-3 against the Cavaliers this season. This would be a spot they could win after losing by three points in the previous meeting."

How much of Eagles' 2025 starting lineup is already locked in?

How much of Eagles' 2025 starting lineup is already locked in? originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Eagles have made it through the early flurry of free agency and the draft is just around the corner. It won’t be long before they’re back at the NovaCare Complex for OTAs and then eventually training camp.

There’s still plenty of time to add players and change the team but now is a good chance to see where they are right now.

Here’s a look at every position on the roster and whether or not the guy in that position is a lock to be a starter in 2025:

Offense: On offense, 8 of 11 starters are locks

QB (lock): Jalen Hurts

The Eagles’ quarterback is coming off a Super Bowl MVP performance and is under contract through the 2028 season, although it’s already time to start thinking about an extension. So much of the discourse around Hurts is tiring: Is he elite? Is he not? … Who cares? Hurts is a good quarterback and is a good fit for the Eagles and what they do. That doesn’t mean he’s impervious to criticism either and at times he has been a little uneven. But the argument that the Eagles can’t win a Super Bowl win him dissolved pretty quickly in Super Bowl LIX. Hurts will be 27 when the 2025 season starts and he can continue to improve as he keeps building his impressive resume.

RB (lock): Saquon Barkley

In 2025, Barkley put together one of the most impressive seasons of any Eagles player ever. He rushed for over 2,000 yards and was named the Offensive Player of the Year. He was good enough to change the entire Eagles’ offense in 2024 and was good enough to get everyone to buy into that wholesale change. Barkley is 28 and coming off a season with 482 touches in the regular and postseason combined — the most for any NFL player since DeMarco Murray’s 2014 season before coming to Philly. There’s probably some fear about the wear and tear but Barkley takes care of his body and the Eagles don’t seem too concerned. With two years left on his contract, they already gave him an extension this offseason. He’s now under contract through 2028.

WR1 (lock): A.J. Brown

He played just 13 games in a run-first offense and Brown still managed to have 67 catches for 1,079 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2024. He wasn’t a Pro Bowler but was named a second-team All-Pro for the third straight season and is absolutely still one of the best receivers in the NFL. Brown is under contract through the 2029 season.

WR2 (lock): DeVonta Smith

Like Brown, Smith was limited to 13 games in 2024. He had 68 catches for 833 yards and 8 touchdowns. He was productive in the playoffs too and his 46-yard touchdown catch from Hurts late in the third quarter of Super Bowl LIX was the dagger that finally put the Chiefs out of their misery. Smith has WR1 talent but plays the WR2 next to Brown. Like so many of the Eagles’ stars, Smith is under contract through the 2028 season.

WR3 (not lock): Jahan Dotson

While Dotson is clearly the front-runner and a near-lock to be the Eagles’ third receiver, his position is clearly not as entrenched as that of Brown or Smith. While it seems unlikely the Eagles use a top draft pick on a receiver it’s not completely impossible. Dotson’s production wasn’t great in 2024 with 19 catches for 216 yards in 17 games. He added 3 catches for 53 yards and a touchdown in the playoffs and had a near touchdown in the Super Bowl. While Dotson’s production didn’t wow anyone, he seemed to make a play every time he was asked to and never pouted about his role. Dotson is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2025. The Eagles should decline the fifth-year option on his contract but they at least get one more year out of him.

TE (not a lock): Dallas Goedert

If Goedert is on the roster, he’s obviously a lock to be the Eagles’ top tight end. He’s been here since 2018 and when healthy is one of the best dual-threat tight ends in the NFL. But there’s a question as to whether or not Goedert will be back with the Eagles in 2025. He’s entering his final year under contract without any guaranteed money and the Eagles have reportedly been open to trading him. If Goedert does get moved, it leaves the Eagles with a tight end room of Grant Calcaterra, Harrison Bryant, Kylen Granson and E.J. Jenkins with the draft looming. Goedert is 30 now and has struggled to play a full season because of injuries but the Eagles are clearly a better team with him on the roster if they can figure out a way to make this work.

LT (lock): Jordan Mailata

The seventh-round pick from 2018 is one of the best left tackles in the NFL. He was on his way to some big accolades this past season before missing four games with a hamstring injury. He was still named to the second-team of the All-Pro squad. Mailata has been the Eagles’ full-time starter since the 2021 season and has continued to improve and has become one of the vocal leaders of the team. He’s under contract through 2028.

LG (lock): Landon Dickerson

During the 2021 season, the Eagles lost then-left guard Isaac Seumalo to a season-ending Lisfranc injury in Week 3 and inserted Dickerson into the starting lineup. He hasn’t given up that position since. Sure, he’s missed a game here or there but Dickerson has given the Eagles’ high-level left guard play now for four seasons and has been named to the Pro Bowl in each of his last three seasons. The Eagles got ahead of Dickerson’s contract last offseason, handing him a four-year, $84 million contract through 2028. That average annual salary of $21 million is still tops in the NFL among left guards and second among all guards.

C (lock): Cam Jurgens

After waiting patiently behind Jason Kelce for two years, Jurgens took over as the Eagles’ center in 2024. He started 16 games in the regular season, was named to the Pro Bowl and then fought through a painful back injury in the playoffs and Super Bowl LIX. As a second-round pick in 2022, Jurgens is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2025 and it’s time for the Eagles to give him an extension to lock him up long-term.

RG (not a lock): Tyler Steen

The Eagles will have another new starter at right guard in 2025, following Mekhi Becton (2024), Cam Jurgens (2023), Isaac Seumalo (2022), Brandon Brooks (2021), Nate Herbig (2020) and Brooks (2019). The last time the Eagles had stability at this position was when Brooks was in his Pro Bowl run but that was a while ago. The Eagles were prepared to go into the 2024 season with Steen as their starter but when he suffered a minor ankle injury in training camp, they plugged Becton into that spot and he never gave it up. Becton this offseason signed a two-year deal to join the Chargers, leaving this spot open again. Obviously, Steen is the most likely candidate to win this job but based on what happened last season, he’s definitely not a lock. The Eagles got former first-round pick Kenyon Green in the C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade and brought back 2018 draft pick Matt Pryor, who has NFL starting experience. While Green has struggled in the NFL and has only played left guard in the league, he should also be in the competition. Pryor has 39 career starts and started 15 games for the Bears last season. And it seems very possible the Eagles will use an early pick on an offensive lineman next month.

RT (lock): Lane Johnson

The last of the Core Four, Johnson will enter Year 13 of his NFL career in 2025 and he hasn’t shown any signs of letting up. Johnson missed just one game last season (aside from the season finale) and was named a Pro Bowler and a second-team All-Pro. After getting another extension this offseason, Johnson is now under contract through the 2027 season and thinks it’s possible he plays out these three years remaining. Johnson will turn 35 before the start of the next season and hopes to continue his stellar play into his late 30s.

Defense: On defense, 7 of 111 starters are locks

DE (lock): Nolan Smith

Based on the conversations around Smith this time last year, it’s amazing that we’re sure Smith is a lock but he earned that with his play in 2024. By the end of the season, he had surpassed Josh Sweat as the Eagles’ top edge player. He had 6 1/2 sacks in 16 games in the regular season and had 4 in 4 games in the playoffs. He really took his play to a new level before tearing his triceps (and playing through it) in Super Bowl LIX. Not only is Smith a talented pass rusher, but he’s stout against the run and sets the edge as well as any 240-pound player can. He plays with a ferocity that has already endeared him to Eagles fans. As a first-round pick in 2023, Smith won’t even be eligible for a contract extension until he plays out the 2025 season.

DT (lock): Jalen Carter

After a promising rookie season, Carter took a big jump in 2024 and was one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL. This is a good lesson that the stats don’t tell the full story: Carter had 6 sacks as a rookie and just 4 1/2 in his second season. But Carter was an absolute game-wrecker while getting double-teamed at an alarming rate. His sack in the fourth quarter against the Rams in the divisional round was a huge play that might have saved the season. Like Smith, Carter isn’t eligible for a contract extension until next offseason. When that extension comes, it’s going to be a massive one. Milton Williams got four years, $104 million and Carter is going to blow that away.

DT (lock): Jordan Davis

You might be surprised to see Davis listed as a lock considering he played just 37% of the defensive snaps last season. But Davis is actually the only player on the team to start every single game over the last two seasons. The Eagles have a decision to make before May 2 about his fifth-year option but the Eagles will likely pick that up to make sure Davis will be on the roster through the 2026 season. The bigger question is about who fills the void left by the departure of Milton Williams, which is a de facto starting position. The top candidate there is Moro Ojomo but he is certainly not a lock. That’s a position that the Eagles could definitely address early in the draft next month.

DE (not a lock): Jalyx Hunt

Josh Sweat had a huge performance in Super Bowl LIX and then left for Arizona on a four-year deal worth over $76 million. That leaves a spot open in the starting lineup. The Eagles used a third-round pick on Hunt out of Houston Christian in 2024 and he was thought to be a raw prospect but he came a long way. Hunt, 24, showed growth all season and was a completely different player in the playoffs. After having 1 1/2 sacks in 16 regular season games, Hunt had 1 1/2 in 4 playoff games. Hunt has a promising future but we’ll see if the Eagles put him in the starting lineup. The other top candidate for now is Azeez Ojulari, who signed a one-year deal to join the Eagles for the 2025 season. In fact, Ojulari might actually be more likely to start than Hunt. Ojulari is a former second-round pick who was productive during his four years with the Giants but has struggled to stay healthy. The Eagles also have Josh Uche on their roster and could draft another edge rusher next month.

LB (lock): Zack Baun

The Eagles made their biggest signing of the offseason before free agency when they gave Baun a three-year, $51 million extension. That’s big money for a linebacker, especially from the Eagles. But Baun was that good in 2024 in his All-Pro and Defensive Player of the Year finalist season and it was hard to think about this Vic Fangio defense without him in the middle. Baun is 28 but he still thinks there’s room for him to grow as he gets further into Fangio’s defense. He said his confidence was so high at the end of last season and he wants to continue that in 2025.

LB (not a lock): Nakobe Dean

If Dean is healthy, he’s an absolute lock at this position. But Dean is still recovering from a torn patellar tendon. That’s a tough recovery and because of how late the injury happened (in the wild-card round), there’s a strong possibility that Dean won’t be ready for the season opener in 2025. If Dean can’t go, the top candidate to fill in for him is second-year third-round pick Jeremiah Trotter Jr. In the 2024 playoffs, Oren Burks filled in for Dean but then signed a free agent deal to join the Bengals. The Eagles were prepared to play Trotter more after Dean’s injury but Burks was too good to take off the field.

NCB (lock): Cooper DeJean

Because of a hamstring injury, DeJean got behind in training camp and began his rookie season behind Avonte Maddox on the depth chart at nickel corner. But coming off the Week 4 bye week, DeJean was inserted into the lineup and ended up helping to completely transform the Eagles’ defense. He capped his season with a pick-6 in the Super Bowl and will now have a full offseason as he gets ready for Year 2 in his career. Could DeJean play outside cornerback? Maybe. We’ll see about the Eagles’ options there. And maybe he could play there in base and then bump inside on nickel downs. But I wouldn’t expect a full-time move unless the Eagles get desperate.

RCB (lock): Quinyon Mitchell

Mitchell finished second in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting and probably would have won the award had he been able to hang on to a few of those early-season drops. But eventually Mitchell did pick off a couple passes in the postseason. And he was great all year long. Mitchell is a lock to be a starter and looks like a long-term stud at the position.

LCB (not a lock): Kelee Ringo

The Eagles released Darius Slay, who then left and signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. This offseason, the Eagles have been working to get younger and cheaper and bringing back a 34-year-old cornerback didn’t fit with that mission. The top candidate to win that other starting cornerback job is Ringo, who enters Year 3 of his career in 2025 and will still be just 23 years old when the season begins. Ringo got more playing time as a rookie in 2023 before getting buried a bit on last year’s depth chart by Mitchell and Isaiah Rodgers, who also left in free agency. In addition to Ringo, the Eagles added veteran Adoree’ Jackson to compete for the job. Jackson is 29 now and seems well past his prime but did start 5 games for the Giants last year.

S (lock): Reed Blankenship

A few years ago, the Eagles took a chance on Blankenship as an undrafted free agent out of Middle Tennessee State and Blankenship has turned himself into a solid starting safety. Blankenship has started 30 games over the last two years and has 7 interceptions during that span. As he gets set to enter the final year of his contract in 2025, it’s time for the Eagles to sign Blankenship to an extension if they want him here long-term.

S (not a lock): Sydney Brown

The biggest surprise of the Eagles’ offseason came when they traded C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans. Even if you understand the Eagles’ reasons for dealing their starting safety, he does leave a big hole to fill and there’s no clear-cut solution. The best candidate on the roster is Brown, the former third-round pick out of Illinois. Brown suffered a torn ACL in Week 18 of his rookie season in 2023 and then found himself buried on the depth chart after missing the start of his second season on the PUP list. The other candidate on the roster is Tristin McCollum, who was demoted during the 2024 season in favor of Avonte Maddox. This position feels unfinished. We’ll see what the Eagles do in the draft and after it to bolster their depth.

Chris Ballard: "Spirited" Anthony Richardson/Daniel Jones competition will come down to performance

Chris Ballard has had a lot of opportunities to find a long-term solution at quarterback during his time as the Colts' General Manager and he's tried a lot of different approaches to the position, but none of them have resulted in a clear win for the franchise.

This year's attempt involves signing Daniel Jones to compete with Anthony Richardson for the starting job leading into the 2025 season. Jones was once seen as the answer for the Giants before injuries and poor play led to his 2024 release and Richardson has had issues on both of those fronts over his first two years in the NFL.

In an interview with the Colts' in-house media team, Ballard said that he believes that the competition is going to help both players do their best work and that the team is going into it without any preconceived notions about who will wind up on top.

“Between Daniel and Anthony, you’re going to see a really good competition," Ballard said. "It’s going to be a spirited competition, but I also think it’s going to be one where they help each other to grow too. We thought Daniel’s skillset, and Anthony’s skillset. There’s a lot of similarities there. So offensively, I think that’s going to help our offensive staff, so okay, we don’t have to make these wholesale changes with one guy or the other. We got to make the best decision for the team. Whatever the outcome is, the outcome is based on performance."

Drafting Richardson fourth overall in 2023 was the biggest swing that Ballard has taken at the quarterback position, so bringing in Jones opens up the door for a pretty damning evaluation of that decision. Whichever way the decision goes, anything other than a trip to the playoffs might make it difficult for Ballard to continue selling himself as the guy with the right vision for the organization.

2025 NFL mock draft roundup: First-round predictions for Patriots

2025 NFL mock draft roundup: First-round predictions for Patriots originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

The New England Patriots have been one of the busiest teams in NFL free agency so far. They have spent over $300 million in contracts so far, with the latest being a three-year, $69 million deal for free agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs earlier this week.

Despite the Diggs addition, it still makes a lot of sense for the Patriots to consider taking Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter, assuming he’s on the board when New England is on the clock with the No. 4 overall pick.

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner has drawn comparisons to New York Jets star Garrett Wilson as a wideout. But a case could be made that Hunter’s best position is cornerback. Even though wide receiver and cornerback aren’t the Patriots’ No. 1 needs right now, passing on Hunter’s elite and unique skill set likely would be a mistake.

Aside from Hunter, the best player in this draft class might be Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter, who has been compared to another Nittany Lions legend, Micah Parsons. Carter is strong, athletic and very difficult to block. He tallied a career-high 12 sacks against quality competition in the Big 10 conference last season.

Edge rusher isn’t the most pressing need for the Patriots, especially after they made so many upgrades to their defense during free agency. But what if Carter ends up being a Parsons or Myles Garrett-like force as a pass rusher?

The Patriots need a left tackle, which is why LSU’s Will Campbell is a popular pick for them in mock drafts. But the Patriots cannot afford to draft for need. They have to just take the best player available. And if that means adding more depth to a position of strength, so be it.

If the Patriots remain at No. 4, which players should they target? Here’s a roundup of expert predictions from recent mock drafts.

Phil Perry, NBC Sports Boston: Travis Hunter, WR/CB, Colorado

“If the first three picks fall this way, the Patriots shouldn’t have to stew on this decision for any length of time. Hunter is one of two blue-chip non-quarterbacks in the class, and he’d slot in immediately as New England’s most talented pass-catcher. With the addition of free-agent corner Carlton Davis III across from Christian Gonzalez, Hunter could also take on a role as a specialty coverage player in nickel or dime situations.

“For instance, the Patriots could allow him to deploy his other-worldly ball skills for a handful of snaps defensively every week while he focuses primarily on the offensive side of things. The team still needs to give Drake Maye a tackle in this scenario, but he’ll be just fine with a new No. 1 wideout.

“The Patriots can’t afford to pass up one of the draft’s most electric talents in order to dip into an imperfect draft class of blind-side protectors in the top five. There’s still time to get the lineman Vrabel needs. He’ll just have to get aggressive to acquire one.”

Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN: Travis Hunter, WR/CB, Colorado

“The Patriots have been active in free agency, including signing Milton Williams, Harold Landry III, Carlton Davis III and Robert Spillane. But as you can see there, the big-name additions have come on defense. All that spending and still no WR1.

“While Hunter could absolutely play cornerback in the NFL, I have him ranked as a receiver, where he can pick apart opponents with his ball skills, quickness and instincts. Despite playing both ways, he caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 scores last season. I just really like the fit in the Patriots’ offense with quarterback Drake Maye.”

Ben Standig, The Athletic: Abdul Carter, Edge, Penn State

“The Patriots face a comparable scenario to the Browns: Choose between the primary need — offensive tackle to help protect Maye — or the top player available. This choice becomes easier when the prospect considered No. 1 in the class who plays a core position is available at No. 4.”

Josh Liskiewitz, Pro Football Focus: Armand Membou, OT, Missouri

“Membou presented a high athletic ceiling in 2023 before his confidence and control took off in 2024. There are times when he could play with more power, but he brings starting-caliber length and movement ability to the NFL with good production as a zone blocker.”

Bucky Brooks, NFL Network: Abdul Carter, Edge, Penn State

“If Patriots personnel chief Eliot Wolf is truly committed to taking the best player available, the Penn State product would be a no-brainer at this point.”

Chris Trapasso, CBS Sports: Abdul Carter, Edge, Penn State

“With Harold Landry and now Carter, the Patriots have two formidably, similarly sized outside speed rushers on the roster.”

Chad Reuter, NFL Network: Travis Hunter, WR/CB, Colorado

“If the Browns decide to draft Abdul Carter, the Patriots will gleefully select Hunter as a future two-way star. His ball skills and after-the-catch ability are not of this planet, so it won’t be a surprise if he becomes a prolific receiver for an offense that needs one, while also working with corners Carlton Davis and Christian Gonzalez.”

Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz, USA TODAY: Travis Hunter, WR/CB, Colorado

“With the Giants’ pick shaping up to be the inflection point of the first round, the Patriots are left to ponder whether one of this year’s premier talents will fall into their lap or if they’ll need to pivot to focusing on sizable voids at left tackle and wide receiver. In this case, the former scenario materializes, and New England can prioritize value while sorting out positional matters later – though Hunter surely qualifies as the game-breaking receiver the team has been missing, so long as the team is willing to give him extensive reps there.”

Charles McDonald, Yahoo! Sports: Armand Membou, OT, Missouri

“Surprise? It shouldn’t be that big of one, considering how many boxes Membou has checked off throughout the draft cycle. He has a legitimate case to be the first offensive tackle off the board. The Patriots need an OT still and Membou has the skills and talent to play either on the right or left side of the line.”

Rob Rang, FOX Sports: Will Campbell, OT, LSU

“The Patriots entered free agency with over $127 million in cap space and wasted no time in using it, leading all teams in players signed and money spent. Left tackle and receiver, however, remain areas of concern. Campbell lacks elite measurables, but he’s as pro-ready as this class gets at tackle, projecting as Drake Maye’s immediate and long-term blindside protector.”

NFL expects kickoff returns to double if touchback is moved to the 35-yard line

The NFL expects the percentage of kickoffs returned to approximately double in 2025 compared to 2024, if the proposal to move touchbacks out to the 35-yard line passes.

Last year, 33 percent of kickoffs were returned after the new "dynamic" kickoff rule was implemented. That was an increase from the 22 percent of kickoffs that were returned in 2023 in the final year of the old kickoff rule — but it was still the second-lowest return rate in NFL history. In 2022, 38 percent of kickoffs were returned, and until touchbacks sharply increased in 2013, most kickoffs were returned every season in NFL history.

The new "dynamic" kickoff rule put touchbacks at the 30-yard line, and most teams concluded that it was safer to boot the ball into the end zone rather than risk a long return. That's why 64 percent of kickoffs still went for touchbacks.

Under the proposed rule that would put touchbacks at the 35-yard line, the league is estimating that about 60 percent to 70 percent of kickoffs will be returned. The Competition Committee has studied the matter and concluded that most kicking teams will put the ball in play rather than kick it into the end zone if the receiving team is given five more yards on touchbacks.

And that's what the NFL wants, for kickoffs to more resemble a normal football play where there's action on the field. The league changed the kickoff rules in large part in response to increased injuries on kickoffs, and data from 2024 indicated that it worked: Injuries are now approximately as common on kickoffs as on any other play. So now the NFL is working on making kickoffs as action-packed as any other play.

Three reasons why Patriots signing Stefon Diggs was a smart move

Three reasons why Patriots signing Stefon Diggs was a smart move originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

The Patriots took some big swings at wide receiver earlier this offseason and came up empty. On Tuesday, they hit, coming to an agreement with free-agent wideout Stefon Diggs, per a league source.

The 31-year-old is coming off a torn ACL he suffered back in October, but Diggs was still able to pull in a deal that ESPN says will pay him $26 million guaranteed — a significant sum for someone that age and coming off that particular injury.

The dollar figure came as a surprise to some in the league, with one AFC executive saying it was “(more) than everyone thought” Diggs would get this offseason. But that amount speaks to how badly the Patriots wanted to add talent to their receiver room.

They’d made some splash signings on the defensive side of the ball — highlighted by defensive tackle Milton Williams — but the offense in New England had glaring holes to fill through the initial stages of free agency, particularly at receiver.

The Diggs deal doesn’t solve all of head coach Mike Vrabel’s roster-building issues. The former Vikings, Bills and Texans receiver is more of a No. 2 option at this stage, but because the Patriots don’t have a No. 1, he looks like their de facto top dog. And no matter who they have at receiver, they’re going to have to find answers at left guard and left tackle along their offensive line.

But their most recent addition, when healthy, certainly qualifies as help for second-year quarterback Drake Maye.

Here are three reasons why the Diggs signing is a wise one for the Patriots…

1. Easy upgrade for Drake Maye

The Patriots couldn’t coax Chris Godwin to New England despite offering him a much more lucrative deal than the one he got from the Buccaneers.

They took a run at DK Metcalf but never made the Seahawks a trade offer because they understood he wasn’t going to sign a long-term deal with them.

They were able to sign Mack Hollins in free agency as a veteran presence for their receiver room. But in acquiring Diggs, they’ve given their young quarterback a bona fide weapon.

Even if he wasn’t their first choice, he’s a clear upgrade.

Diggs averaged 5.9 catches and 62.0 yards per game last season in Houston as the sidekick to No. 1 option Nico Collins. Both marks would’ve easily been the best among Patriots wide receivers in 2024. (DeMario Douglas led the team with 3.9 catches per game; Kayshon Boutte averaged 39.3 yards per game.)

Diggs also hauled in 31 first-down conversions over eight games before being knocked out for the season. Douglas led all Patriots receivers with the same number of conversions in 17 games.

The Patriots are just hoping Diggs can get back to that pre-injury level, when he was on pace for his seventh-consecutive 1,000-yard season with 47 catches for 496 yards through eight games.

2. Culture fit, believe it or not

Culture matters to Vrabel, and the new Patriots coach said earlier this month that he wanted to be careful about the types of people he brought in to occupy his locker room.

“We don’t want to be reckless through this process,” Vrabel said. “We want to be very intentional with the people that we bring on this football team, and we’ll continue to target all those needs that we feel like and the players that can help us.”

If the Patriots get the player who the Texans got a year ago, they’ll have someone they can feel good about sending into the offensive huddle with Maye.

“He got along with people well here… Everyone liked him,” said one Houston staffer. “He was a good teammate and worked hard. No noticeable issues. He understood Nico was the guy.”

🔊 Next Pats Podcast: Why Stefon Diggs IS a fit for Mike Vrabel’s culture with the Patriots | Listen & Subscribe | Watch on YouTube

The Patriots likely already have good intel on what kind of teammate and worker they’ll get in Diggs. They met with him last week in Foxboro to check in on the progress of his knee and to get to know him a bit better.

Additionally, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ brother, Ben McDaniels, was Diggs’ receivers coach in Houston. And new Patriots receivers coach Todd Downing was on the Minnesota staff during the early portion of Diggs’ career he spent with the Vikings.

They understand who they’re getting with this deal.

Of course, Diggs was sent from Buffalo to Houston for a reason. He was sent from Minnesota to Buffalo for a reason. But at all three spots he maintained a reputation as a hard-working player with a burning desire to win — elements Vrabel won’t mind adding to his locker room.

“I loved him,” said one Vikings staffer who worked with Diggs. “He was a handful, but he could play. You only get to complain if you can produce, and I would think he gets that now.”

3. Impact on the room

One side benefit to the Diggs addition is how he’ll be able to rub off on the rest of the receiver room at One Patriot Place.

He’s a fiery competitor and route-running technician who happens to be among the NFL’s most productive receivers of the last decade. He’s a four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro.

Pockets of the receiver room in Foxboro last year were viewed by the previous coaching staff as lacking maturity and the requisite level of professionalism. Diggs won’t only help raise the talent level of that group, but his approach might help rub off on young players who’d benefit from being around a player of his ilk.

Though he may not be the true No. 1 he was earlier in his career — Diggs spent 52.8 percent of his snaps in the slot last season, per Pro Football Focus — he can also help others at his position settle into roles befitting their talents.

Douglas remains one of their quickest options and could have the middle of the field opened up for him to an extent with Diggs drawing attention between the numbers. Meanwhile, Boutte, Kendrick Bourne and Ja’Lynn Polk could end up seeing more carefully-managed workloads if and when Diggs is back on the field on a regular basis.

The veteran receiver options have thinned considerably, but Diggs’ acquisition doesn’t prevent the Patriots from continuing to look for more high-end help at receiver.

For instance, if the team was in a position to draft dual-threat Heisman Trophy-winner Travis Hunter at No. 4 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, having Diggs as a savvy route-running No. 2 option could be beneficial to Hunter as he picks up the finer points of the position after splitting his time on offense and defense in college.

Whether he’s the No. 1 or No. 2, the Patriots spent the money they needed to spend in order to improve at a premium position Tuesday.

There’s still work to be done, but the draft is a month away, and the addition of Diggs now makes it easier to envision the Patriots offense achieving respectability come the fall.

Why his 76-yard pick-6 off Jalen Hurts was a bummer for Adoree' Jackson

Why his 76-yard pick-6 off Jalen Hurts was a bummer for Adoree' Jackson originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

You can learn a lot about Adoree’ Jackson by what he says about the biggest play of his nine-year career.

On Christmas Day 2023 at the Linc, Jackson picked off Jalen Hurts at the Linc and returned it 76 yards for the longest pick-6. It’s the 2nd-longest pick-6 ever by a Giant against the Eagles and the longest by any defensive player against the Eagles since Patrick Robinson – another former Eagle – had a 99-yarder off Michael Vick at the Superdome in 2012.

You’d think Jackson might have spoken with a little braggadocio or a little bluster recalling that play after he signed with the Eagles. But nothing of the sort. For one big reason.

The Giants lost.

So for him, it’s not a moment to celebrate.

“If I can be honest now, my first pick-six, I don’t want to say it didn’t mean much, but at the same time I knew what type of game it was and what was about to happen,” he said.

“Really what I remember about that game is right after the pick six, it was a 3rd-and-and-hell-of-long, like third-and-whatever, A.J. Brown hits a comeback. I’m out of the game because I need oxygen. They throw a comeback on our sideline. It was deep right. He made like a deep comeback. He caught it on third-and-20 something. They converted and they go down and score.”

Jackson’s memory is spot on.

His touchdown and Saquon Barkley’s two-point conversion brought the Giants within two points at 20-18 at the end of the third quarter. Moments later, the Eagles had a 3rd-and-20 on their own 26, and Hurts converted with a 32-yard completion to Brown. A few plays after that D’Andre Swift scored from five yards out to extend the Eagles’ lead back out to nine points on the way to a 33-25 win.

“And so the game goes from being down maybe three (and) being able to swing the game back to our way to win it to now it’s back out of reach,” he said. “So that’s really what I remember.

“I was thankful I got my first pick-6 there, but we didn’t win. So it’s like whatever. So that’s really what I remember about Christmas Day.”

That’s a nice little window into the mentality of Jackson, who the Eagles signed to a one-year contract to provide cornerback depth this year after the losses of Darius Slay, Isaiah Rodgers and Avonte Maddox.

It’s not about him, it’s about the team, and that should make him a good fit in this team’s culture.

Jackson, 29, spent four years with the Titans and four with the Giants before signing with the Eagles. He’s played in 97 games with 82 starts and was a starter on the 2019 Titans team that reached the AFC Championship Game, losing to the Chiefs.

How does his mentality fit with the Eagles?

“I did talk to Saquan (before he signed),” Jackson said. “He’s a competitor, and the first thing he said was, ‘You know, they’re just like you. They just love to compete. They compete at everything.’ And pretty much that’s all I needed to know. As long as somebody wants to compete, whether it’s playing rock, paper, scissors, playing cards, we could be swimming, don’t matter. As long as we’re competing and trying to get to it, I appreciate that.”

And at 29, he doesn’t really fit into Howie Roseman’s youth movement, and he’s actually the oldest defensive player on the roster.

“I think it really doesn’t matter,” he said. “So I’m excited about that and being one of the oldest in the room is cool. I came in one of the youngest. It’s just the circle of life. It’s a part of the game so I appreciate being able to be in this position.”

Lakers lose again as NBA play-off race intensifies

The Orlando Magic ended a six-game home losing streak by inflicting a third straight defeat on the Los Angeles Lakers.

Luka Doncic scored 32 points and LeBron James added 24 and eight assists for the Lakers, who led 60-58 at half-time.

However, Orlando outscored the visitors 34-18 in the third quarter and went on to wrap up a 118-106 victory.

Franz Wagner contributed 32 points and nine assists for the Magic, while Paolo Banchero added 30 points and seven rebounds.

"We look tired," said Lakers coach JJ Redick. "I don't know what contributes to that. We weren't able to sustain the level of intensity that we started the game with."

The Lakers, who have lost seven of their past 10 games are fourth in the Western Conference with 11 games of the regular season remaining. The top eight qualify for the play-offs and they have eight more wins than the ninth-placed Sacramento Kings.

The Magic occupy eighth spot in the Eastern Conference and have 10 games left.

Elsewhere on Monday, in a match featuring two sides unlikely to make the play-offs, the Dallas Mavericks welcomed Anthony Davis back from injury in a 120-101 victory over the Brooklyn Nets.

Davis scored 12 points in 26 minutes as he returned from six weeks out with an abductor injury - suffered in his first game for Dallas after his trade from the Lakers in exchange for Doncic.

Jimmy Butler calls return to Miami Tuesday 'Another game... I don't even think about it'

Things got messy in Miami — Jimmy Butler never hesitates to burn a bridge on his way out of town. From the moment Heat decision-maker Pat Riley said after last season that he was not going to give Jimmy Butler the max extension he wanted, we all knew what was coming. Butler eventually demanded a trade, was suspended multiple times by the team, and it was all a massive distraction from which the Heat have never recovered (Miami had lost nine straight before Sunday's win against tanking Charlotte).

Tuesday night, Jimmy Butler returns to Miami in a Golden State Warriors uniform — and the welcome may not be very warm. It's a big, emotional game... unless you ask Butler.

"Another game for me," Butler said Saturday night after a win in Golden State, via the Associated Press. "Another game that we're expected to win, for sure, though."

Butler wasn't done, including talking about his Miami years, via Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.

"We was all right. We didn't win like we were supposed to. We made some cool runs. We had some fun...

"I was traded from there, yadda yadda yadda. Yeah, it didn't end the way people wanted it to, yadda yadda yadda. But that's so far behind me now, I don't even think about it."

It's easy not to think about it, given that the Warriors have gone 16-3 with Butler in the lineup and look like a threat in the West.

However, picking up that 17th win may be challenging with Stephen Curry expected to miss the game with a lower back contusion (Curry has flown to Miami and joined the team for the six-game road trip they are starting but is not expected to play at the start of the trip). No Curry means the ball will be in Jimmy Butler's hands more, giving Heat fans more chances to express their feelings. All of which makes this must-watch TV.

Texas tight end Gunnar Helm has pre-draft visit with Broncos

The Broncos may not be done adding tight ends after signing Evan Engram in free agency.

Texas tight end Gunnar Helm went to Denver for a pre-draft visit with the Broncos, according to Mike Klis of 9 News. Helm was born and raised in Colorado, so he counts as a "local" visit for the Broncos and does not count toward the team's limit of 30 draft prospects who can travel to the team headquarters for visits.

Helm had a rough performance at the Scouting Combine and it was later revealed that he had badly sprained his ankle at the start of the event but went through the workouts anyway. His Combine measurables won't impress NFL teams, but his decision to tough it out on a bad ankle might.

Last year at Texas Helm caught 60 passes for 786 yards and seven touchdowns.

Grizzlies center Brandon Clarke out for season with sprained knee

Memphis Grizzlies backup center Brandon Clarke is out for the season due to a "high-grade PCL sprain in his right knee," the team announced.

The injury happened against Portland last Wednesday as Clarke defended Scoot Henderson on a drive to the basket.

This is a tough blow for Clarke and the Grizzlies.

This was another unfortunate fluke injury for Clarke, who had missed almost all of last season with a torn Achilles. It ended a solid bounce-back season in which he averaged 8.5 points and 5.1 rebounds a game while playing quality defense.

For the Grizzlies, they lose a key part of their frontcourt rotation. Clarke was rock solid off the bench and an anchor anchor Memphis' second unit. Clarke also started 14 games this season when Jaren Jackson Jr. was out. Memphis feels much thinner up front now heading into the playoffs.

The Grizzlies have dropped three straight and slid back to fifth in the West but are still within a game of the Denver Nuggets at No. 3 (with the now-healthy Lakers in fourth). Memphis is just three games back of No. 2 seed Houston. However, the Grizzlies need to look over their shoulders because a hot Warriors team is now just two games behind them with 11 games left to play.

Warriors' Butler shrugs off Heat return as just ‘another game'

Warriors' Butler shrugs off Heat return as just ‘another game' originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

For Jimmy Butler, the Warriors’ upcoming matchup with the Miami Heat on Tuesday is just another game. On just another day that ends in -y.

And while that might be the sentiment that Golden State’s veteran forward coveys publicly, the first game against his former team since the blockbuster Feb. 5 trade is one Butler likely has had circled for quite some time.

However, you wouldn’t know that based on his comments about the upcoming matchup after the Warriors’ 124-115 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday.

“Yeah, I was traded from there, yada, yada, yada,” Butler said after Saturday’s loss about his return to Miami. “Yeah, it didn’t end the way that people wanted to, yada yada yada.

“But that’s so far behind me now. I don’t even think about it. I don’t pay attention to nothing except for the trajectory of this squad.”

Butler led the Heat on two NBA Finals runs in four years, and as he prepares to return to the arena where he played five-plus seasons and created countless memories, he is not worried about the reception he will receive from Heat fans on Tuesday night.

“Not really, don’t make no difference,” Butler said. “I’m a member of the Golden State Warriors. I love that fan base. They showed me a lot of love while I was there. But I’m there to win now. I’m on the opposing team.”

While Butler had plenty of success during his time in Miami, he and the Heat ultimately fell short of their ultimate goal.

“We were alright,” Butler shared. “We didn’t win nothing like we were supposed to. So I don’t know. We made some cool runs. We had some fun. I think that’s all we did.”

Despite Butler’s subdued reaction to the Warriors’ upcoming game, the weight of the reunion is not lost on his new teammates.

“We got Jimmy over here, I know this is a big game for him,” Warriors forward Draymond Green said. “They got [Andrew Wiggins] over there. I know it’s a huge game for him. We want to win for Jimmy, they’re going to want to win for Wiggs. We got to come out ready to play.”

After a frustrating loss to the Hawks without injured superstar Steph Curry, the Warriors (41-30) will look to bounce back against the Heat (29-41) on Tuesday in a game that probably means more to Butler than he is willing to admit.

Warriors take 'bad loss,' in Draymond Green's words, to Hawks behind Trae Young's 25 points

Roob's Observations: A critical roster question the Eagles need to answer

Roob's Observations: A critical roster question the Eagles need to answer originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

Finding a swing tackle after Fred Johnson’s departure, two low-budget Howie free agents who have a good chance of contributing and the world’s greatest Tanner McKee stat.

It’s your lucky day! This weekend’s 10 Random Eagles Observations has arrived on your doorstep!

1. Losing Fred Johnson is an under-rated significant loss because Big Fred played well in his five starts this past year – one at right tackle, four at left tackle – and his departure leaves the Eagles without a clear successor as that third tackle who can play on either side. Johnson, who turns 28 in June, signed a one-year deal with the Jaguars, where he’ll get an opportunity to compete for a starting spot, something he obviously wasn’t going to get here. Who are the candidates to replace him? Brett Toth has been on and off the Eagles’ roster and practice squad since 2019 – and has also spent time with the Cards and Panthers – but he’s only started one meaningful game in his career, and that was in 2023 in Carolina. But he’s a Jeff Stoutland favorite and can play guard or tackle and anybody the Eagles invest this much time in could be in the mix. Darian Kinnard, the Chiefs’ 5th-round pick in 2022, was on the roster all last year but didn’t play any meaningful snaps. But they kept him on the 53, which tells you something. Tyler Steen has tackle in his background so maybe if he doesn’t win the right guard job he could get a look as a backup to Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata. There’s also Jack Driscoll, who started four games at right tackle in 2020, one in 2021, two in 2022 and one in 2023 as well as a game at left tackle in 2022 and nine games at guard. But he’s coming off a serious ankle injury and he’s also a free agent and probably more of a guard these days anyway. Who’s the favorite? Probably someone who’s not here yet, either a cheap veteran with some experience or a rookie draft pick. It’s not an ideal situation, but when you have Stout on your side you know he’ll figure it out.

2A. Seventeen Eagles 27 or older started at least one game last year. Only six of them are still here: Lane Johnson, Dallas Goedert, Zack Baun, Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown and Jordan Mailata. The other 11? Brandon Graham retired, Darius Slay was released, C.J. Gardner-Johnson was traded, Josh Sweat, Fred Johnson and Oren Burks signed elsewhere and C.J. Uzomah, Nick Gates, Avonte Maddox, Britain Covey and Jack Driscoll are currently unsigned.

2B. There are only five players left on the roster who have been here since before Nick Sirianni was hired: Lane Johnson was drafted in 2013, Jake Elliott signed off the Bengals’ practice squad in 2017, Dallas Goedert and Jordan Mailata from the 2018 draft and Jalen Hurts the 2020 draft. (Brett Toth has been here on and off since 2019 but has also spent time with the Cards and Panthers along the way.)

3. Tanner McKee is the only quarterback in NFL history to complete at least 65 percent of his passes with two TD passes and no interceptions in each of his first two career games. Donovan McNabb had two such performances in his first 63 career games, Randall Cunningham two in his first 82 games and Carson Wentz two in his first 30 games. Jalen Hurts did it in 18 games.

4. Jordan Mailata played 530 pass block snaps last year and allowed two sacks, no quarterback hits and had a 95.1 Pro Football Focus grade, which was the highest among all players last year at every position. And didn’t make the Pro Bowl. Everybody who didn’t vote for him should be ashamed. For the sake of comparison, NFC Pro Bowl tackle Taylor Decker of the Lions allowed eight sacks and four QB hits and had a grade of 77.2 and Pro Bowler Brian O’Neill of the Vikings allowed four sacks and no QB hits and had a 79.3 grade. Among 67 tackles who played at least 500 snaps, Mailata’s run block grade of 94.5 was highest, Decker’s 70.3 was 28th and O’Neill’s 74.1 was 19th. Mailata’s pass block grade of 90.8 was second to Tristan Wirfs, but Decker’s 78.0 was 24th and O’Neill’s 79.7 was 21st. A travesty.

5. Of the entire haul of second-tier free agents Howie Roseman has piled up, I’m most intrigued by two: Azeez Ojulari and A.J. Dillon. Both have pretty serious injury concerns, which is why the Eagles got them so cheap, but both are also former 2nd-round picks still in their mid-20s – Ojulari is 24, Dillon 26 – and both have done some pretty impressive things when they’ve been healthy. Ojulari has only played 46 games in his four NFL seasons, but he’s averaged almost half a sack per game – 22 in 46 games. That’s much higher than Josh Sweat (43 in 104 games), but can you keep him on the field? He’s only averaged 11½ games per season. But the production has been there. I still think the Eagles will draft an edge pretty high next month, but among Josh Uche, Bryce Huff and Ojulari I think the former Giant has the best chance to be a difference maker in 2025. As for Dillon, from 2021 through 2023, he was one of only four backs with 2,000 rushing yards, 80 catches and 8½ yards per catch. He says he’s over the stingers that cost him the 2024 season, and we’ll see. Another guy whose career has been derailed by injury concerns, but like with Ojulari the talent is clearly there. He seems to understand and embrace his role as Saquon Barkley’s backup, which means long gaps where you might not even get on the field. All these guys the Eagles signed have something in their recent background that’s a red flag to varying degrees, but Ojulari and Dillon are two guys who could definitely help.

6. Brandon Graham was the last Eagle who played for Andy Reid, which got me wondering about the last player remaining with the Eagles under other coaches. So I looked it up going back to 1960. There are still four guys here from the Doug Pederson years – Jake Elliott, Jordan Mailata, Dallas Goedert and Jalen Hurts – so let’s start with Chip:

Chip Kelly [2013-2015]: Lane Johnson [2013-2025]
Andy Reid [1999-2012]: Brandon Graham [2010-2024]
Ray Rhodes [1995-1998]: Brian Dawkins [1996-2008], Tra Thomas [1998-2008]
Rich Kotite [1991-1994]: William Thomas [1991-1999]
Buddy Ryan [1986-1990]: Randall Cunningham [1985-1995], Fred Barnett [1990-1995]
Marion Campbell [1983-1985]: Randall Cunningham [1985-1995]
Dick Vermeil [1976-1982]: Mike Quick [1982-1990]
Mike McCormick [1973-1975]: Jerry Sisemore [1973-1984]
Ed Khayat [1971-1972]: Harold Carmichael [1971-1983]
Jerry Williams [1969-1971]: Harold Carmichael [1971-1983]
Joe Kuharich [1964-1968]: Garry Pettigrew [1968-1974], Mark Nordquist [1968-1974]
Nick Skorich [1961-1963]: Nate Ramsey [1963-1972], Jim Skaggs [1963-1972]
Buck Shaw [1958-1960]: Timmy Brown [1960-1967]

7. Including the postseason, Zack Baun had 184 tackles, 3½ sacks, 13 tackles for loss, three interceptions, seven pass deflections, six forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and a 75.0 defender passer rating that was 2nd-lowest among linebackers (minimum 50 targets). It was an absolutely ridiculous season. There’s a notion that Baun was so good in 2024 he can’t get any better. But I disagree. He’s had one year as an off-ball linebacker and one year in Vic Fangio’s scheme. He’s still new at this. What player who works as hard as Baun and is as smart as Baun doesn’t get better in his second year at a new position with a coach like Fangio? Baun might not pile up all the stats he had this year, but as far as being a better linebacker over a full season, recognizing things better, diagnosing things better, understanding things better? I wouldn’t be surprised if we see an even better Baun in 2025.

8. Throw out 1986 because it was Buddy Ryan’s first year with the Eagles and he had to get his system installed and clear the roster of dead weight. Throw out 1987 because it was the strike season, with one game cancelled and three played with replacement players. That leaves 1988 through 1990, when the Eagles’ defense had Reggie White, Eric Allen, Clyde Simmons, Jerome Brown, Seth Joyner, Wes Hopkins, Andre Waters, Byron Evans and Mike Pitts, all in their prime. Yet the Eagles ranked 14th out of 28 teams in defense during that three-year span, had just one top-10 defense, never ranked higher than eighth and allowed at least 20 points in all three playoff games. How could a defense with all that talent be 14th out of 28 teams over a three-year span? Buddy coached five years with the Eagles and two with the Cards and is one of only four coaches in NFL history to coach at least three playoff games and not win any. The others are Marvin Lewis (0-7), Jim Mora (0-6) and Allie Sherman (0-3). Of those four, only Ryan lost every playoff game he coached by at least two possessions.

9A. The Eagles have still had only one rushing touchdown longer than four yards in their five Super Bowls. That was LeGarrette Blount’s 21-yarder in Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis. That’s actually the only rushing touchdown the Eagles have ever had in a Super Bowl by a running back. Their four other Super Bowl rushing TDs have all been by Jalen Hurts – 1, 2 and 4 yards in Super Bowl LVII in Glendale and that 1-yarder last month in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.

9B. Jalen Hurts is one of only six quarterbacks with more than one career Super Bowl touchdown pass of at least 45 yards. He had the 45-yarder to A.J. Brown two years ago and 46-yarder to DeVonta Smith last month. The others are Terry Bradshaw, John Elway, Kurt Warner, Brett Favre and Doug Williams.

10A. Saquon Barkley has 19 percent of the 60-yard touchdown runs in Eagles history.

10B. Barkley had as many 60-yard rushing touchdowns this year as the Eagles had in 611 games from Week 7 of 1959 through Week 16 of 1998.
